What is it?PDF Permissions is a PDFLean security & privacy tool: Inspect a PDF's encryption scheme and permission bits (print/copy/modify/annotate), and re-apply granular permissions locally with qpdf.
TL;DR: Inspect a PDF's encryption scheme and permission bits (print/copy/modify/annotate), and re-apply granular permissions locally with qpdf. Everything runs locally in your browser — your file is never uploaded and is cleared when you close the tab; applying permissions re-encrypts with AES-256, requiring an owner password of at least 4 characters to remove restrictions.
About this tool
Inspect a PDF's encryption scheme and permission flags (printing, copying, modification, and annotation), and re-apply granular permissions locally in your browser with WebAssembly qpdf. Files are re-encrypted with standard AES-256 upon saving. Everything runs entirely client-side in browser memory without uploading, and files are cleared immediately upon closing the tab. Free with no account required; on-page file limits apply.
How to use
Upload a PDF; enter its open password to inspect current settings
Choose the allowed print/modify/copy permissions
Set an owner password and apply to download
FAQ
Will my file be uploaded?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — your file is never uploaded and is cleared when you close the tab.
Are there any limits?
Applying permissions re-encrypts the file with AES-256; the owner password must be at least 4 characters, and you need it to modify or remove restrictions.
Is the protection strong enough?
Everything happens locally in your browser; passwords and file contents never reach the server. Applying permissions uses robust AES-256 encryption.
Can I process multiple files in bulk?
A single tool page handles one task at a time; for bulk work use the Batch Processing workflow and add this tool as a step to run a whole set at once.
Is the processed file still editable?
This tool does not alter PDF content, only its permissions. The output is a new file while your original document remains untouched; you can modify or remove restrictions later using the owner password.
