Smart PDF Document Search & Reader

Hybrid Processing

Local PDF reading and search: build an in-browser text index of papers, reports, and contracts, then ask questions and get answers with page-level citations. Indexing and search run locally; when you request an AI-synthesized answer, only the matched passages are sent to the AI service — never the whole document.

Mixed processing: local by default; some steps use encrypted cloud with results kept by plan · ≤ 50 MB per fileLocal tools: free & unlimited, no account needed · Cloud tools require a free account (3 tasks per day)

What is it?Smart PDF Document Search & Reader is a PDFLean AI document tool: Local PDF reading and search: build an in-browser text index of papers, reports, and contracts, then ask questions and get answers with page-level citations.

TL;DR: Local PDF reading and search: build an in-browser text index of papers, reports, and contracts, then ask questions and get answers with page-level citations. Local steps never leave your browser; only matched passages are sent encrypted for AI synthesis; See the size and page limits shown on the tool page.

About this tool

A focused utility built for a single recurring document task. Local PDF reading and search: build an in-browser text index of papers, reports, and contracts, then ask questions and get answers with page-level citations. Indexing and search run locally; when you request an AI-synthesized answer, only the matched passages are sent to the AI service — never the whole document. Where possible the work happens locally in your browser; only matched passages are sent encrypted when requesting AI-synthesized answers. The workflow is deliberately short: load the file, choose the options on the page, run the operation, and save the result. Every choice is applied before the file is written, so re-running with different settings takes seconds. Practical limits apply (see the on-page limits); it pairs well with the related tools linked beside this page when one step is not the whole job. Key facts — Processing: hybrid — local where possible; Access: local search is free without login; AI synthesis requires login and consumes AI credits; File limits: see the on-page limits; Privacy: full document never leaves the device; only matched passages sent for AI synthesis.

How to use

1

Upload your PDF document (research paper, report, contract, or manual); for image-only scans, run Local OCR first to generate a text layer

2

The engine extracts text locally and constructs an in-browser keyword relevance index

3

Ask any question in natural language or click one of the suggested starter prompts

4

The assistant provides structured answers with clickable page-level citations — open a citation to jump back to the source page

5

Support multi-turn follow-ups, with one-click Clear Chat available anytime

FAQ

Is my confidential document uploaded or used for AI training?

No. Document parsing, indexing, and search are completed entirely on your local device — the full document is never uploaded. When using 'AI Synthesis', only the matched text passages are sent to the AI service. Local search and page citations are free; AI synthesis requires login and consumes AI credits, and data is not used for model training.

Can I ask questions about image-only scans?

The document needs a text layer first. For image-only scans, run Local OCR to generate a searchable text layer, then import it here. Answer quality depends on the completeness of that text layer — text the OCR could not recognize cannot be retrieved.

How do the page-level citations work?

The engine extracts text page by page and builds a local chunked index; at query time it retrieves the most relevant passages for AI synthesis. Each answer item is annotated with its source page number, and clicking a citation jumps back to the original page for verification. Conclusions that cannot be drawn from the document are stated as such rather than invented.

How long of a PDF can this tool handle?

It comfortably handles documents with hundreds of pages. Text chunking and indexing run locally and typically complete in a few seconds (depending on document size and device performance); searches then run on your device.

Will uploaded research papers or contracts be used to train AI models?

Never. Text chunking and indexing run entirely inside your browser's local memory and are cleared when the page is closed. Only matched passages are transmitted during AI synthesis queries, with zero persistent storage and no use for model training.

Can I ask questions in Chinese about an English or foreign language PDF?

Supported. However, since local search relies on keyword matching, it is recommended to include original keywords from the document in your query to improve retrieval accuracy. Matched passages can then be synthesized by AI into answers in your preferred language with page citations.

Can the AI extract tabular data or generate an executive summary?

Yes. Based on extracted text passages, AI synthesis can summarize key points or organize figures into Markdown tables. Note that tables are reconstructed from plain text streams, so complex merged cells or intricate layouts cannot be perfectly replicated.
